Weekend Video: All Out! Dancing in Dulais

11/8/2014

The real thing: LGSM members march in support of the minersThe recently released hit movie PRIDE was inspired by an extraordinary true story. In the summer of 1984 in Great Britain the National Union of Mineworkers were on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.

The documentary Dancing in Dulais, tells their story. The wariness on the part of the young gays, the miners, and the miners’ families gives way, through sometimes delicate interactions, to a loving and purposeful solidarity against Thatcher’s Tory agenda.
