Nominate your 2019 Scumbag of the Year

12/21/2019

It’s that time of year again when we gather round the fire with family, friends and co-workers and share our stories about the boss.

We continue Rankandfile.ca’s annual tradition of nominating and voting for Scumbag of the Year.

We are giving out two awards in 2019, one for the private sector, one for the public sector.

The Rules

  1. In the comment section below, let us know who you think are the year’s worst bosses, scumbag politicians, and right-wing hacks. There are too many of these around the world, so we’re limiting it to scumbags in Canada.
  2. Tell us why they deserve to Scumbag of the Year. Last day for nominations is Boxing Day December 26.
  3. Nominees will be published and voting begins December 26. Rankandfile.ca can then vote for their nominees. Winners will be announced New Year’s Day.

Linda Knight presides over a firm that keeps its hardworking members in precarious, low-paying jobs, most of whom are part-time without benefits. In its yearlong dispute with SEIU, the firm has played hardball at the bargaining table, taking away two paid sick days, and even refusing a modest increase for travel compensation.

    • Dyana Juby says

      12/21/2019 at 2:49 pm

Rather than paying a living wage to it’s certified and skilled healthcare staff, CP is recruiting untrained workers and untrained immigrants for a lesser wage. With 11 days of training they are being shimmied into position to care for our most vulnerable senior population while deterring those who are trained professionals with years of experience. There is no PSW crisis…merely a neglect by companies such as Carepartners to recognize the worth of it’s employees and provide them a decent living.

Private Sector : Northern Pulp for delaying 5 years to clean up the dumping of pollution into a First Nations territory and then, when faced with the deadline, closing the plant and shaming the government and indigenous community for insisting that they obey the law and stop poisoning people.

Instead of negotiating a fair collective agreement for Health Care employees she instead decides to lock out their employees for SIX MONTHS and refuse to negotiate. Linda Knight has refused to negotiate and show up at the table for three different bargaining agents just in 2019 alone! The worst part of this is that CarePartners is funded by our tax dollars!

Linda Knight, CEO of CarePartners. She expects her front-line workers to work 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for low wages, no benefits, no pension, no paid sick days caring for our sick and vulnerable people. These services are funded by our tax dollars. She runs a for-profit business which to her means that her staff are not looked after, so she has more of these dollars going to her coffers! Despicable!!!

  17. Psw says

    Linda Knight Carepartners CEO
Refuses to properly compensate workers for travel in Homecare, holidays denied, two tier pay scale new hires are frozen as well as 40% of the workers at a higher rate but also frozen, refuses to meet with workers or bargaining committee, threatened lockout, workers are fearful, low hours, benefits are lost if you don’t average 25 hours a week so many have no benefits and pay the larger portion of the benefit

  25. Matt says

    12/21/2019 at 1:16 pm

Neil Fassina is the president of Athabasca University. Despite a large operating surplus, Fassina forced wage freezes on employees again last year and is seeking rollbacks this year. He also jacked student tuition by 7% and has moved dozens of jobs out of the small town where the university is based (and is the largest employer). Just before Christmas, he proposed replacing a 35-year policy in order to remove 67% of employees from the faculty association just before bargaining begins.

    • Jennifer says

      12/21/2019 at 5:28 pm

Seconded on Neil Fassina. He’s accomplished nothing during his tenure as President and the staff are furious with being constantly treated with contempt. As well, he’s been engaging in a strategic withdrawl from the University’s headquarters in Athabasca and lying about it the entire time like it isn’t happening and the large job losses are just made up. Millions of dollars have been lost from a small town in violation of his own university’s mandate.

  28. Cory Weir says

    12/21/2019 at 2:27 pm

    Jerry Dias, President of Unifor.

This year was a busy one for Jerry. He tore the CLC apart so he could raid international unions, served as a lap dog for the Liberals and continued championing the USMC free trade agreement that has undermined the entire working class.

He ran a phony PR campaign against GM for leaving Oshawa and swept the legs out from militant rank and file action, all while serving up blustering platitudes to maintain the appearance of a working class fighter.

Jerry’s gross mismanagement of the largest private sector union in the county has been an absolute gift to corporations, who could never have sold their neoliberal agendas to workers without him.

How about the province of Quebec for their treatment of any public sector worker who wears religious clothing?

Jason Kenney or Doug Ford (again) for their massive cuts and layoffs.

Galen Weston…do I need to list the reasons?

  35. Tali Zrehen says

    12/21/2019 at 5:42 pm

Its no surprise after reading all the comments that Linda Knight of CarePartners has been nominated several times. This employer is by far the worst out there in the homecare industry. PSW’s are leaving by the hundreds not only because they are making $16.50 an hour ( one of the lowest in the industry) but with the amount of health and safety issues, lack of proper travel compensation and generally no respect for front line staff, Linda Knight has shown how little she cares about those who care. Shame on Linda Knight of CarePartners, while you make money off of tax payers as CP is a for-profit company, PSW AND CLIENTS are impacted everyday by the terrible working conditions.
I hope you win this award Linda, and I hope the members of CarePartners wins a fair deal.

  36. Janice Pitt says

  37. Corey says

    12/21/2019 at 6:00 pm

Linda Knight, CEO of CarePartners. She pays her PSWs poverty wages and now there is a retention crisis that is leading to seniors not getting the care they need. To top it all off, just weeks before Christmas she moved toward locking the workers out, threatening the holidays for both the workers and the thousands of seniors they care for. If that isn’t the definition of a scum bag, I don’t know what is. “Bah Humbug” – Linda Knight, probably

  38. Jesse says

    12/21/2019 at 6:00 pm

Linda Knight, CEO of CarePartners. CarePartners is a homecare company that takes in millions in profits while locking out its workers in Sudbury until finally laying them all off. They are also threatening to lockout over 2000 SEIU Healthcare members, who already earn poverty wages.

  39. Seán Soper says

    12/21/2019 at 6:38 pm

Linda Knight, CEO for Care Partners has been beyond the pale for some time now.

  40. MJ says

    12/21/2019 at 7:26 pm

Jason Kenney, AB Premier, because the policies he’s passed have done nothing but cripple Alberta’s economy, cause layoffs, and target the most vulnerable members of society while giving a tax break to wealthy corporations. He tore up the city charters for Calgary and Edmonton, downloading provincial debt onto the municipalities that cannot bear it.

Adriana LeGrange, Minister of Education (AB), because to justify the funding cuts they leveled on our education system halfway through the year, she’s targeted the school boards to blame them for the $164 million she cut from their budgets. They’re scrambling to get their fiscal houses in order by firing teachers, because the UCP refused to give them a budget before the school year started.

Matt Wolf, Press Secretary for the UCP, because he’s being paid with our tax dollars to attack private citizens on social media over their political views, particularly women, and implicitly encouraging his following to go after them with even more vitriol and threats. He’s unprofessional in the extreme and does not deserve to be paid with public money to spread hate.

  41. Jonathan Trautman says

    12/21/2019 at 8:13 pm

    Jason Kenney

  42. Lois Keays says

    12/21/2019 at 8:23 pm

Worst Employer, Canada Post Corporation for consistently denying equity for workers, deliberately delaying arbitrated hearings for a CUPW contract that expired December 31, 2018 and denying Health & Safety concerns for Federal Crown Corporation employees, while rewarding bully-tactics and overburdening by management with bonus incentives.
Worst Politician, Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. Deliberately dismissing Auditor General reports of fiscal mismanagement, lack of oversight and unaccountable practices to ensure his corporate sponsors and friends receive ongoing favour from government agencies. Limiting working Ontarians’ ability to sustain themselves in capping the minimum wage, reducing funding and eliminating necessary educational supports.
All while receiving the majority of his political support from Rural Ontario, he deliberately channels all initiatives into the major urban centres and champions a “casino” economy as a viable revenue stream. Even as his OLG staff sits negligent, overpaid and actually reducing profit.

    Jason Kenney
Kenney has taken control of public sector pensions; has ensured that educational funding does not keep pace with increases in enrolment; has cut grants that help to control class size; has cut grants that keep school fees low; has cut monies allocated for educational assistants; has cut funding to nurses by $100 million; has ensured that 46, 000 people lose drug coverage; cut ambulance services by $11 million; cut upkeep and new build funding for hospitals; has made a list of cuts so long, I can’t keep going. I guess some of his cuts are good for the top 1%: corporate tax cuts to the tune of $4.7 million (so far) that have resulted in the loss of 27, 000 jobs.

Proposes 40 Modular nuclear reactors instead that would cost the province $120 billion, far beyond our GDP. Cuts to social assistance, housing supplements for people with disabilities, cuts to legal aid parameters, takes over authority over Wascana park to allow business to chop down 110 trees..destroying habitat and undermining the integrity and beauty of Regina’s only attractive area, its parks. Refuses to include the carbon tax just to be ornery, no action on carbon emissions reduction. Does nothing on Climate Crisis.

The Leader of the People’s Alliance .. turning his back on NH workers, and doing Higg’s biding ..This party stood with the NH workers in May supporting us in a motion and then just on Dec 20th showed His True Colors ..If I were to give u a visual of How crazy this situation is here in NB picture Mr Burns and Smithers..running the NB legislature this is what the two remind me of Higgs- Mr Burns and Austin- Smithers..

He created a party of homophobes and racists committed to destroying public services in Alberta, so he could hand $4.7 billion in tax cuts to the rich once he was elected. He attacked public education and health care, destroying thousands of jobs in his first year. Jason Kenney, Premier of Alberta. Despite the funding cuts to healthcare, education, child and family services, Kenney’s government has also removed the rate cap on what utilities companies and insurance companies can charge. People with disabilities on AISH are affected by the cuts, as Kenney’s government deindexed AISH, and will be imposing cuts on AISH recipients.

People are losing jobs, despite oil companies getting billions in tax breaks and handouts. (Some of them are even leaving Canada.)

Important grants to nonprofits are being cut. Kenney has spent more than $30 million in public dollars to fund the “Canadian Energy Centre”, better known as “The War Room”for reacting to and correcting perceived misinformation on the province’s energy industry. Kenney is still under investigation for his underhanded tactics to win the leadership race in 2017 and has fired the man in charge of that investigation.

Mr. Banda has decided to throw aside the co-operative values and integrity of the Co-op Retailing System and change the company into a money-fueled, power-hungry corporation. In 2018, the Refinery achieved record profits of $1.1 Billion, in 2019, the Refinery achieved 2nd highest profits in the 80-year history of $959 million. With all that cash to do with what they wanted, FCL decided to; 1. Put 400 Moose Jaw Co-op workers on the picket line for over a month to force two-tier wages. 2. Put the 900 Saskatoon Co-op workers on a 5.5-month strike ending in April 2019 to force two-tier wages. 2. In August 2019, Calgary Co-op announced it would start sourcing its food from competitor Save-On-Foods instead of FCL in the spring. In response, FCL closed its Calgary food distribution warehouse and will lay off the 200-plus employees who work there, effective in April 2020. 3. Dec 5th, the FCL refinery in Regina locked out it’s 730 workers to gut their pension and roll back other benefits. Those members are still on the line over Christmas.
