The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) is currently recruiting to fill a vacancy to the position of Community Organizer at the SFL’s Regina office for a term expiring December 31, 2015 (with the possibility of extension).

The position is full-time, and offers very competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and flexibility. The full terms and conditions of employment are set out in the collective agreement between the staff union (CUPE 4828) and the SFL.
Compensation for this position is $5,000 per month.

The successful applicant must also have a vehicle and be fully licensed to drive as provincial travel and overnight stays will be required.

JOB DESCRIPTION – COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
RESPONSIBILITIES
The community organizer will work under the supervision and direction of the SFL’s strategic advisor and president to advance social and economic justice, promote electoral engagement, and help develop organizing capacity through grassroots campaigns, education, and awareness. The community organizer will conduct these responsibilities within the existing framework of Project: Community.
The community organizer’s responsibilities will be fulfilled using the following tactics, in accordance with the objectives of Project: Community:
1) Education and issue awareness:
a. Help organize events;
b. Assist in developing and implementing SFL campaigns;
c. Research salient issues as directed;
d. Assist with updating and promoting Project: Community’s online presence;
e. Maintain and advance Project: Community’s contact database, as directed;
f. Assist in implementing CLC campaigns;
g. Assist in implementing affiliate campaigns;
h. Assist in implementing community campaigns;
i. Conduct training and education (community and members), as directed;
j. Attend sessions, workshops, and conferences about issues important to the SFL, its members, and the community at large, as directed.
2) Community solidarity:
a. Attend meetings of community based advocacy groups, as directed;
b. Assist with offering support and capacity training to community members; c. Assist with building networks of community activists.
3) Electoral engagement:
a. Assist with implementing the approved Community Fairness plan;
b. Assist with engaging union and community members;
c. Assist with contact database development and maintenance;
d. Coordinate election activities with other progressive groups to get out the vote, as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS
The community organizer must have previous experience working with community-based advocacy organizations, such as (but not limited to): students’ unions, anti-poverty groups, Indigenous organizations, and environmental groups. Demonstrated leadership and previous experience working within the labour movement would be considered an advantage.
The community organizer must possess a solid understanding of the functions of government, demonstrated proficiency – through work or volunteering – in conducting sessions, developing workshops, and instructing educational material. The community organizer should have experience in participating in various aspects of campaigns with an organizing component; from planning, participating, and completion. The community organizer must be able to work in a team environment, and take direction from the SFL’s strategic advisor and president.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational capabilities, computer and website knowledge, and social media proficiency are required for the position.
COMPENSATION
Compensated in accordance to Appendix B of the collective agreement between the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 4828 and the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.
